Change Lives & Donate Zakat

Unite 4 Humanity will collect your Zakat and distribute it in the UK and to other Muslim countries to those qualifying for zakat. Donate Zakat with absolute confidence. In Sha Allah

Similar to our 100% donation policy, U4H also operates 100% Zakat policy.

Zakat is the compulsory giving of a set proportion of one’s wealth to charity. It is regarded as a type of worship and self-purification. Zakat is the third Pillar of Islam.

Categories of People Who can Receive Zakat

There are eight categories of people entitled to zakat according to Allah saying:

“Indeed, [prescribed] zakat are only [to be given] to the poor and the indigent, and to those who work on [administering] it, and to those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to [free] those in bondage, and to the debt-ridden, and for the cause of Allah, and to the wayfarer. [This is] an obligation from Allah And Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.”{Al-Qur’an, 9:60}

How Do We Distribute Your Zakat?

When you donate zakat, then this zakat should be paid in cash according to the practice of the Prophet (Sal’lallaho Elayhi Wasal’lam) and his companions and the most authentic sayings of the scholars. It is not our business or the concern of the donor how the person above uses the cash; whether he/she uses it for shelter, food, debts and so forth, is entirely up to the recipient. The most important thing is to ensure he/she falls into one of the categories mentioned in the verse above. This is where Unit 4 Humanity comes in; we ensure your donations go to the people who fall into the categories mentioned above.

There is an exception to the above rule of giving cash and that is if the one who falls into one of the categories mentioned above is insane, has a mental illness, a child, or you feel he or she may squander the wealth foolishly. In such a case, it becomes permissible to purchase the needs for that person rather than distributing cash.

Zakat To Propagate Islam

From the above categories, scholars mention that Zakat can be spent on projects like printing dawah material, building schools for poor & needy (not for people who can afford) and pay the wages of teachers teaching in those schools.

Summarised Fiqh of Zakat

Zakat becomes obligatory on the money & assets once the following two conditions are met:

  1. It reaches the minimum threshold (nisaab)
  2. One lunar year has passed since it reaches the minimum threshold (nisaab).

If the money and assets are less than the minimum threshold (nisaab), then no zakat is due on it.

Obligation of Zakat

If your money or assets reaches the nisaab, and one year has passed, i.e. a lunar (Hijri) year has passed since the time when it reached the nisaab, then Zakat becomes due at that point.

  • The nisaab is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver.
  • The rate that must be paid for Zakat is one quarter of one tenth (2.5%).

Zakat must be paid on all kinds of wealth, whether it is saved in a bank or otherwise, if it reaches the nisaab by itself or when added to other kinds of wealth, such as trade goods and the like, and one year has passed since it reached the nisaab.

Your Wealth Doesn’t Decrease by Zakat

Zakat does not decrease one’s wealth. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) swore an oath to that effect when he said: “Charity does not decrease wealth.” Narrated by Muslim.

In fact, Zakat is a means of increasing wealth, bringing barakah (blessing) to it and warding off harm from it.
