In the icy mountains of Skardu, northern Pakistan, where temperatures drop to –15°C, lives Mariam — a widowed mother of four.
Her home is little more than cracked mud walls and a tin roof patched with plastic. When winter sets in, the wind creeps through every gap, turning her house into a freezer.
Last year, her youngest son Haris, barely three, fell ill with a chest infection. With no firewood or heater, she wrapped all her children in one damp quilt and prayed through the night.

“I kept blowing into Haris’s hands,” she whispered. “They were so cold I thought I’d lose him.”
