Aqiqah for Newborn
Aqiqah for Newborn
Aqiqah holds a special place in Islamic tradition as it represents the joy of welcoming a newborn into the Muslim community. It is an act of gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the blessing of children, performed through a ceremonial sacrifice.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Every child is mortgaged by his ‘Aqiqah which is sacrificed for him on his seventh day, and he is named on it, and his head is shaved” (Sunan Abu Dawood, 2838)
This hadith clearly shows the importance of Aqiqah as a means of offering thanks to Allah and a way to ‘ransom’ the child by performing a good deed on their behalf.
In addition to the hadith, Islamic teachings emphasize the significance of Aqiqah through various practices. It is recommended that two sheep or goats are sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl, though the key is the act of giving, regardless of the number. The meat from the sacrifice is then distributed among family, friends, and importantly, to the poor and needy as a gesture of charity and goodwill.
The ritual of Aqiqah serves multiple purposes. It is a moment of celebration, a charitable act, and a physical embodiment of the parents’ hopes and prayers for their child’s well-being and future. It also reflects a community’s interconnectedness and the Islamic value of caring for one another, particularly the less fortunate.
By performing Aqiqah, Muslims not only follow a sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ but also engage in an act of worship that benefits the larger society. It’s an auspicious start to a newborn’s journey in life, marked by piety, generosity, and blessings from Allah (SWT).
